St Peter’s Collegiate Church has
a fine choral tradition which is as old as the church itself. In fact, in
his History of Ruthin School Keith M. Thompson pointed out that the Taxatio
of Pope Nicholas IV (1291) included among the Canons of the College of
Ruthin one Henri le Mestre, whose title ‘Mestre’ may connote that he had
charge of directing the song within the church.
Although originally an all-male
foundation, the present choir is made up of both male and female adults and
junior choristers.
Choir members are drawn from
within the Parish and the wider local community. Junior choristers are
drawn from local primary schools. In addition, we have strong links with the
nearby Ruthin School Music department. Besides, festival services, the choir
usually sings each Sunday morning at the Eucharist or Matins; and a
"Cathedral" style setting of Evensong each month.
In addition, the choir sings as
guests in both the Welsh and English Cathedrals. The choir has also acted as
a deputy choir at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral during the summer period,
and, further afield, has sung twice at Notre Dame in Paris. Later this year
(2010) the choir will visit Westminster Abbey to sing.
Rehearsals are on Friday
evenings in the Song Room of the Old Cloisters: junior choristers at
6.30-7.15pm and the adults at 7.30 -8.30pm. Junior choristers follow the
RSCM ‘Voice For Life’ scheme, which rewards them with a variety of levels of
proficiency in music reading and vocal/singing technique. The Director of
Music and all chorister mentors have Enhanced CRB clearance within the
Church in Wales. If you would like more information upon joining the choir,
